In 1934, their first prototype, the Kwanon, emerged. Named after the Buddhist goddess of mercy, it was Japan’s first 35mm focal-plane shutter camera, a groundbreaking achievement that signaled the arrival of a new contender in the photography world. The Kwanon, though a prototype, embodied the spirit of innovation that would define Canon for decades to come.   

The company’s name, Canon, was adopted in 1947, a phonetic adaptation of Kwanon that was deemed more marketable globally. This marked a turning point, signifying Canon’s ambition to expand beyond Japan and establish itself as a global brand.

Canon’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology was evident in the development of the Pellix in 1965. This unique SLR featured a fixed, semi-transparent mirror that allowed for continuous viewing and reduced camera shake. While the Pellix had its limitations, it showcased Canon’s willingness to experiment and explore new approaches to camera design.  

The Electronic Revolution (1970s-1980s)

Canon’s innovative spirit continued into the 1980s, with the development of the EOS system, launched in 1987. This revolutionary system featured a new lens mount, the EF mount, and introduced autofocus to SLR cameras. The EOS system, with its advanced technology and user-friendly design, quickly became the industry standard, solidifying Canon’s position as a leader in the SLR market.  

The Digital Dawn (1990s-2000s)
