In the 1940s, with World War II raging, the Swedish Air Force sought a reliable aerial reconnaissance camera. Victor Hasselblad seized this opportunity, leveraging his photographic expertise and mechanical aptitude to design and produce a high-quality camera that met the stringent requirements of the military. This marked the birth of the first Hasselblad camera.   

The Birth of a System (1948-1960s)

In 1948, Hasselblad unveiled the 1600 F, a revolutionary medium format camera that set a new standard for interchangeable lenses and modular design. This camera, with its unique 6x6cm image format, quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional image quality and versatility.  

The 1600 F was just the beginning. Hasselblad continued to refine and improve its camera system, introducing models like the 500C in 1957. This camera, with its robust build quality, reliable leaf shutter, and intuitive operation, became a favorite among professional photographers worldwide. It established the foundation for the classic Hasselblad system that would endure for decades.
